Ainsley Harriott

Welcome back everybody. Now for six years my next guest starred in the hit televison series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and he is now on the Fox Family Channel Higher Ground. Please welcome Joe Lando.

Joe walks out to cheers, screams and applause.

AINSLEY: Hi Joe. I believe that we have something in common, eh?

JOE: Yes, my real name is Ainsley.

Everyone laughs

JOE: It's an old family name. Who knew after all these years.

AINSLEY: (laughing) It's an old Scottish name.

JOE: Is it, really?

AINSLEY: I believe it is, yeah, an old Scottish name and I think you get the Ainsley crest, you know they used to have all these different sorts of crests and stuff around depending on where you lived in the country.

JOE: I was just in England but I didn't get a chance to check out a crest but I will next time. But no, I was a chef for years. I cooked for years and years and I catered motion pictures for a while there and - I was never a starving artist.

AINSLEY: Any famous celebrities that you cooked for?

JOE: I worked in a little restaurant in the Palisades, a Sicilian place called Vitorios, I have to plug it because that's where I met my wife and I have a lot of friends there, but a man who used to come in all the time and - I'm a big fan of his - Billy Crystal and Dom Delouise, these two guys came in often and Dom was the first man who came into the kitchen and said "I just saw you on something, you were fantastic, wha-wha-what was it? When I was on the soaps here in New York, he was on the East coast some place and he would write me letters telling me how proud he was of me and now I work with his son, his son directs some of our shows Higher Ground up in Vancouver and last time I was back in LA was for my son's christening and so we went for dinner at the restaurant where my wife and I met, Vitorios and we had this dinner there and in walks Billy Crystal with his grown up daughter who was just a little girl when I used to know her and he was sitting there and I thought he's not going to bother and I look so much different, it's been 10 years and at the end of the dinner I was outside saying goodbye to everybody and thanking them and Billy comes over and he was gracious enough to say congratulations on all your good luck and the wife and the baby and everything - it was just one of those things where a celebrity takes the time to ....

AINSLEY: People that we've looked up to for years, too, do you know what I mean?

JOE: Exactly. Billy Crystal. The man who knows the Oscars better than anybody.

AINSLEY; Fantastic. But I've got to say, you talked about looking different, I mean you look significantly different from the Dr. Quinn days don't you eh?

JOE: Yeah, it was a risk.

AINSLEY: What happened to that lovely mane?

JOE: I cut all that off. It's in a bag in my office some place. The beard is going grey now. Actually I let people sell it at auctions for certain charities, I mean that's a good way to use it, it's hair isn't it? I'd throw it away.

AINSLEY: Well tell us a bit about Higher Ground then. This is new isn't it?

JOE: Higher Ground is my first foray into something that I'm a producer of and it's a show I'm very proud of. We shoot it up in Vancouver and it's about a school for kids who are at risk, teens at risk, and it's based on true schools that are all over the country, all over the world and we did research by going to these schools. And it takes place a lot in the outdoors (insert a clip here of Peter shooting the rapids in a kayak) - this is right after one of the kids escapes, they always try to run from these schools and this kid does - the great thing that I get to do things like this, kayaking, look at this turn, and then I make it, I'm so proud of myself, I get around this rock, and then God, I missed him (everyone laughs) but when you have your own TV show you're always the hero.

AINSLEY: That's pretty physical there Joe. Do you do all your own stunts and things?

JOE; I do about 99% of them. I've been thrown from horses when I was on Quinn, did a lot of that silly stuff, I do a lot of the climbing because my character's a mountain climber. I've severed nerves in my fingers but the time I hurt myself is when they say cut and I'm walking back to my chair because I'm not concentrating (laughs).

AINSLEY: Well perhaps you'd like to do some cutting with me in the kitchen on another occasion.

JOE: I'd love to. It would be my pleasure. I like working in the kitchen.

AINSLEY: Wouldn't it be fantastic to have him in the kitchen? (Cheers and applause). Yeah!

JOE: And under your guidance.

Now Higher Ground is on the Fox Family Channel yeah? Check that out guys. Every Friday night on Fox Family as I was just saying, you can see Higher Ground. It really is worth checking back. We'll be right back with an Ainsley tip.
